My boys were awake for the drive this time which was great! We had long discussions about all kinds of things which helped the drive tremendously. Since they were awake we also stopped at a few places too. The best was a beef jerky store that also had honey, candy and hot sauces. We all got some delicious beef jerky and the boys got some candy to enjoy as well. Throw in a few fast food stops and gas and we made it in one piece.
When we got to Grandmas house we all settled in and tried to decide what to do over the holiday weekend. Grandma was online and asked the boys “What’s an Anime Convention?” WOW! Did that get their attention! Both my boys love anime and, after staring at her all google eyed for a sec, whipped around to me… And the begging and pleading began. LOL Not much of a hard sell really since I kind of like anime too. After explaining it to Grandma she decided to stay at home. (what, all the weird costumes didn’t appeal to her? lol) None of us had ever been to anything like that so we were hoping for the best and we were not disappointed. Pictures below!
The next day we hung out with Grandma and then went to the beach for a few hours and watched a movie together. All in all a nice relaxing day. A few pictures below.
The last full day there we opted to go to Catalina Island and had a blast. It has really grown over the years since I had last gone and, honestly, I think it has grown too much. It used to be a quiet little place to hang out on the beach and enjoy some local cuisine but now it is a crowded tourist trap. It was still fun but I don’t know if we will be going back anytime soon. The one defining moment was the golf cart ride. Grandma wanted to drive. She said she had a lot of experience with golf carts since she golfed all the time and was familiar with them. Okay. No one was about to argue. The issue came when we were high up in the mountains. The narrow roads were very winding and there were no guard rails. Just a 150 foot drop to certain death if you missed a turn. Let me reiterate that. There were NO GUARD RAILS!! I was holding on to the seat with a white knuckled death grip as Grandma nonchalantly drove while looking everywhere but the road. But what really kicked the fear level up a notch was when I looked over to see Grandma staring down at the brake pedal. I heard her say to herself “Why is it so hard to push down on this thing?” I whipped my head up and we were heading straight for a hairpin turn. All I saw was a little bit of road left and then nothing but open air and a plunge to all of our deaths. Simultaneously I head Nicky screaming he was about to jump out and Jimmy yelling that he was on the wrong side of the cart and was going to die. Now, I’d like to think I kept a cool head and grabbed the wheel but…
I never really knew I could scream at that high of an octave.
Grandma looked up and turned just in time asking what all the yelling was about.
We all asked, in unison, if we could stop at the nearest clothing store so we could all buy some new pants.
Yeah, not going back to Catalina. LOL
