Amazingly, considering it was his first tournament, he did GREAT! He ended up 10th out of 22 players and earned a medal. He was very happy. I actually did horribly and only won one game, and that was basically given to me for free. To explain – We were deep into the game and the other played suddenly yelped. I looked up at him and he said he blew it and thanked me for the game. I looked at the board and then at him with a questioning look on my face. He pointed out the checkmate to me and I must have looked shocked because he laughed and said, “you didn’t see it did you?” I smiled and said “no, but thank you – I see it NOW.”
Yeah, my only win and I didn’t really feel like I earned it. Oh well.
We then went on to the bughouse part of the tournament.
Now, for those of you unfamiliar with bughouse, it is a four-person chess match with two teams of two. It is also a five-minute game just like blitz. The catch is that you give your teammate any captured pieces and vice-versa. It gets pretty wild and is generally fast, furious fun.
I generally don’t do to well in bughouse because, well, I suck at blitz and bughouse is just blitz on drugs. Messes with my head. But I still love the game! (Yeah, I know, I’m a twisted individual.)
Anyway, I somehow managed to win 8 out of 15 games and pulled in the 3rd place trophy! I was shocked. Jimmy, on the other hand, didn’t do so well, only winning 4 out of 15 games.
All in all we had a great day and we both came home with something to show for it.
Looking forward to the next one!!
