I jumped in my car early to beat the traffic and made it to Wikieup before I finally gave in to hunger. It’s only a 5 hour drive to Las Vegas but I was feeling the pangs of hunger, or munchies, or whatever. lol A quick stop at the local “mini-mart” and, armed with a bottle of water and a box of Cheez-Its, I was good to go!
My first game was against a 92 year old man on a breathing machine. In addition his wife was with him. She had severe Alzheimer and needed to be tethered to the table so she didn’t wander way. I won. I told my mom about my win later. Her response?
Yippee. You beat a cripple.
Next to me there was a seven year old girl playing an older gentleman. She was so small she had to kneel on the chair to see the chessboard. She destroyed her opponent.
I wonder what her mom said to her after her win.
My following games were all against much higher rated players. I am not sure why I wasn’t playing against people more my level. Maybe the old man I beat had a brother that was in charge of the pairings. Either way the results were fairly predictable. I lost all the rest but one. Since I was playing highly rated opponents my rating still went up over 50 points with the two wins.
I did hit the chess store and picked up a nice shirt. Other than that there was nothing there to catch my interest.
One notable highlight. There was an amazon lady at the chess tournament. She was, like, seven feet tall. She had on a dress that was VERY low cut in the front and VERY high cut on the sides. I am guessing she won most of her games. LOL
In all I made several new friends, had some warm laughs, good meals and great company.
I am looking forward to next year!
